This is going to be an ironic commentary given that this comic was inspired by a class project that I didn't particularly want to do. For the record, I believe I did a good job on it anyway. We don't always get the assignments we'd like to get in school. With some assignments lacking in fairness and/or morality, there are definitely times when one should speak up and protest. Most of the time, however, one should just shut up and do the project. Don't get me wrong; there are projects I will bash amongst my fellow students, and if I REALLY think there is something wrong with a project, I will speak my mind in open class. But I have seen instances of whining to the professors that have just made me question what the student expects of the workplace and life in general. Let's say someone is in an illustration class, and is assigned to draw something for an article chosen by the teacher, but the student doesn't much care for the article. Everything else about the assignment is fine, the article isn't offensive or immoral, the student just finds it boring. Now picture this student, in a whiney, "but I don't wanna go to school today" tone, saying they don't like that article and don't want to do it, slumped in their chair with an exasperated, beaten look that if not for prior knowledge of what was actually going on would give onlookers the impression that this individual was reeling from having been dealt some manner of unspeakable injustice. Were this student to discuss this project in an unfavorable light with other students, that'd be fine by me. I frequently do that. It's essentially a social norm in college, and it's often very therapeutic. I'm not complaining about that sort of complaining. But to act like some horrific sin has been committed against you because you weren't given the exact perfect assignment with chocolate and motor bikes and super models who actually have healthy body weights... mmmm... super models who actually have healthy body weights... ...I'm sorry, what was I typing about? Anyway, point is, we're not always going to get super fun happy assignments. And yeah, sometimes there are genuine reasons to raise a fuss to the professor and get some aspect of the assignment changed. Generally speaking, however, it's best to just get the project over with.
